The Shih Tzu is a sturdy little companion dog also known as the “chrysanthemum” dog. The hair on their noses grows upwards giving them that nickname. Their coats are normally long with a topknot that is usually tied with a bow so the dog can see properly. You can also keep their hair trimmed short so it is easier to keep them groomed. They, like the Maltese, have a long, hairy tail that drapes over the back.

The Shih Tzu is a happy, hardy and spunky little dog. Sometimes they even seem arrogant! They are quite funny and entertaining. They are also a very gentle and loyal companion. The Shih Tzu does well with polite, caring children. They make friends easily, are playful and lively, and quite clever! The Shih Tzu makes a good watch dog and will alert to (bark at) strange noises but is most often quiet inside the house.
Shih Tzus shed little to no hair and are good for most allergy sufferers if their coats are kept very well groomed. Paying close attention to good grooming habits means shedding little skin dander. Please research to find other facts about human allergies to pets before choosing any companion.
The standard weight for a Shih Tzu is between 9-16 lbs. Sizes can vary. We usually know about what size a puppy might grow to be as an adult by knowing their parent’s weight. We can guess and be close but cannot guarantee their adult weight.
We believe that these dog babies are deserving of only the best homes – where a dog isn’t just a dog, but a family member. If you are looking to bring home a new dog baby and make it your new family member, give us a call!
