The Shih Poo is a hybrid mix of a Shihtzu and a Poodle. The physical and behaviorial characteristics that are prevalant in Maltese and Shih Tzu may also be passed onto the offspring.

Shih Tzu Characteristics:

The Shih Tzu (correctly pronounced sheed-zoo) is a popular dog because of it's plucky and playful personality as well as for it's attractive and beautiful features. An excellent apartment dog, the Shih Tzu doesn't need to have an outdoor space for exercise, however, as with all dogs, does need a daily walk.The Shih Tzu loves to be surrounded by people and can live with other pets with little problem. Because of their small stature and delicate looks, it can be easy to spoil them; however, a Shih tzu, like other toy dogs, do well with consistant training and rules, as well as having an owner who is stronger willed than she is. Brush the silky coat daily. As the Shih Tzu sheds little dander, they are good for most allergy sufferers. Poodle Characteristics:

Highly intelligent, the Poodle is one of the easiest dogs to train. Their personalities tend to be good natured and friendly, and are a calm breed. They enjoy being around others and are a good house and family (especially one with children) pet, and do well in a house with other pets present. Poodles adore water and require daily walks, and if properly exercised, are quite inactive inside a house. A firm, but not harsh, hand is required when training or repremanding a poodle. They are very sensitive to their owners tone of voice so a calm, firm word is usually all it takes to control a poodle. Poodles have a curly or corded coat, and do not shed, making them a great pet for allergy sufferers. Please research to find other facts about human allergies to pets before choosing any companion.

At Bear Creek Maltipoo each of the Shih Poo’s parents are purebred dogs. The mom can either be a Shih Tzu and the dad a Poodle or vice versa. Shih Poos come in all colors! We raise only first generation, F1, Shih Poos. We use one of two Toy Poodle studs that we have now. The mom will be Shih Tzu. Our Toy Poodle, Pedee weighs 7.5 lbs and is sable parti. Our other Toy Poodle stud is Rudee and he is mature at 4.5 lbs. He is red/apricot. Again, we usually know about what a puppy might grow to be as an adult by knowing their parent’s weight. We can guess and be close but cannot guarantee their adult weight.
